Small, practical steps towards a healthier everyday routine.

Between work, commuting and family responsibilities, looking after yourself can slip down the list. Building healthy habits does not have to involve a complete lifestyle overhaul. A few realistic changes to how you eat, move and rest can give your wellbeing more space in the day.

This general guide from BN Clinic 19 brings together seven ideas you can adapt to your routine.

Your everyday wellbeing checklist

Varied meals • Regular movement • Sitting breaks • Consistent sleep • Less sugary drinks • Simple planning • Organised health questions

1. Build variety into everyday meals

Healthy eating can start with familiar foods. Include vegetables, whole fruit, pulses and whole grains across your meals. A practical lunch might combine rice or roti with dal, vegetables and a protein source that suits your preferences. Rotate ingredients through the week to add variety.

Keep foods high in salt, free sugars and unhealthy fats occasional rather than everyday staples. Read WHO guidance on a healthy diet.

2. Make movement part of your week

A busy schedule does not have to mean an inactive day. Brisk walking, cycling and dancing can all count towards physical activity. Adults should aim for 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, plus muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days.

Start with manageable sessions and build gradually. If you have a medical condition or have not exercised for some time, ask your doctor which activities are suitable. See WHO physical activity recommendations.

3. Break up long periods of sitting

Desk work, commuting and screen time can leave little room for movement. Look for opportunities to get up, walk around or do a short household task between periods of sitting. Try linking a movement break to the end of a work task so it becomes easier to remember.

These small breaks complement your weekly exercise. The NHS recommends reducing sitting time and breaking up inactivity.

4. Give sleep a regular place in your routine

Adults aged 18–60 generally need at least seven hours of sleep each night; sleep needs vary with age. Set a bedtime that leaves enough time to rest, and try to wake up at a consistent time.

Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed, keep your room quiet and comfortable, and avoid caffeine in the afternoon or evening. If sleep problems continue or you feel tired despite enough sleep, speak with a healthcare professional. Learn more about sleep from the CDC.

Three bedtime habits: keep a consistent bedtime, put screens away and create a calm bedroom.

5. Rethink your everyday drinks

Sugary soft drinks, sweetened tea and packaged juices can add substantial sugar to your day. Try water or unsweetened drinks more often, and reduce the sugar you add to tea or coffee gradually.

Whole fruit is usually a better everyday choice than fruit juice: even juice without added sugar contains free sugars. WHO explains free sugars and healthier food choices.

6. Plan one small change you can repeat

Choose a step that fits your actual routine: prepare a fruit snack, set aside time for a walk, or put your phone away before bed. Write it down and decide when you will do it.

For a busy Kolkata household, a shared shopping list or a simple meal plan can make the next day’s choices easier. Start with one change and review what helped after a week.

7. Keep your health questions organised

Keep a short note of concerns you want to discuss at your next consultation. Bring your current medicine list, existing reports and any questions about the advice you have received. Ask for clarification if an instruction is difficult to follow.
